Donna Giguere, APLD, has been practicing the art of landscape design for 18 years. She majored in Art & Metal Sculpture at Portland State while also studying gardening and geology. She later studied Landscape Design at Clackamas Community College. She enjoys working with her clients on an individual basis with every landscape design as unique as the people who own it. A portfolio may be viewed at giguerelandscapedesign.com.
The landscape design featured here is a commercial project designed by Donna for Vanport Marine.
Vanport Marine, a family owned business, repairs ships at sea and fabricates parts in their 14,000 sf machine shop. They are also available for large steel and aluminum fabricating and repair for architects, designers and contractors.
Because they are located on busy Columbia Blvd they were in need of a sense of safety and enclosure in their front offices. They wanted to reinvent their dull industrial building. Donna helped the owners select the paint design and designed the planters and trellises, which Vanport Marine fabricated.
The planters and planting design are meant to evoke the feeling of ships at sea. Various sizes of flanges found in their shop were re-used as a decorative “water” element on the planters. An old ship bit (used to tie up ships) makes an interesting statement near the front door. This south facing, scorched-earth site has very drought tolerant plantings.
